It's been unusually dry in Vancouver for this time of year, which is good for riding. And it's been nice to see the sun in the middle of winter, which is certainly an anomoly for a city that is typically drenched in rain from October to April. However, accompanying the sunshine has been unseasonably cold weather, which is not good for riding. What to do.....well I decided to keep riding as much as possible, so I bundled up and braved the cold on dry days. I've avoided riding on days with any moisture because I know of too many people who have crashed on black ice and ended up with significant bruises or worse.
I've been riding to work as much as possible which is a little under 10km each way. I've supplemented this with longer rides a couple times a week on the way home from work - about 20-30 km distances - and have tried to fit in a longer ride on the weekends. Last Sunday Susan and I rode arund Stanley Park, out to UBC and back which is about 50km. We both thought it was pretty easy and were very pleased that we found it so as that is half our daily distance on the trip, although we had next to no gear on our bikes so we're only fooling ourselves! And I have to admit that we did stop along the way for some shopping and lattes, but that's how we'll ride on the trip so might as well start training for those breaks too!
I'm still working on getting my bike fitting perfectly (I still have that 'other' new bike for sale if anyone's interested - for those of you who don't know, I bought a bike that ended up being too big for me and eventually had to downsize) and am adding all the requisite bells and whistles like a computer, mirror, racks etc. I haven't found the perfect seat yet; it likely doesn't exist, but I do need to get something a bit more comfortable than what I'm on now.
As for the Ride to Conquer Cancer: I'm about halfway to my fundraising goal of $2,500. The fundraising has been difficult, more so than the riding. I find it difficult to ask people for money and have to remind myself constantly that I am not asking for money for me, but rather for the Cancer Foundation.
