All about Training

How fit do you have to be to ride a bike across Canada? I’m trying to figure out the answer to that question. Well, actually my question is a little more specific ….How fit do you have to be to ride a bike across Canada with minimal pain? I reckon the more the training hurts, the less the ride will hurt.

Some people have told me not to bother about training since after a couple weeks on the road I can’t help but be in shape after logging a couple thousand kilometers. I’m not convinced of that logic though, so am going to develop a training plan and try to stick to it.

I was able to ride to work until about mid December but the snow put a stop to that and I’ve been taking the bus lately to avoid the black ice and dense fog that Vancouver has been engulfed in the past couple weeks. I’m hoping that February will bring better commuting weather.

But back to the training plan. I want one. I need one. I am going to develop one. So stay tuned!

Why Susan Wants to Do This

On my list of things I want to do in my life, riding my bike across Canada has always been one of the adventures I wanted to do. It was something I thought I would do in a lesuirely way one summer when I retired. When Amy made up her mind that this was something she wanted to do in 2009 and started soliciting her friends to see if anyone wanted to join her, I was on that list.

While I have done big holidays on my own I much prefer to travel with someone or a group of people I know. The appeal for me was that here I have this opportunity to do a big trip I have always wanted to do with someone who I get along with quite well. Amy and I have done several trips together so I know we could get along. The problem was though that I just was not planning a big trip like this right now in my life.

The last couple of years have been pretty hectic for me in regards to my home life. I went through a huge renovation on my home and then had the task of doing a major landscaping project to finish the project. This was going to be my summer to reap the rewards of all that hard work and angst over the renovation project. Not that I have not been enjoying things now. I love my home and garden.

However, when opportunity knocks you need to answer it and go through that door. You only live once, plus when I am retired I might not be physically able to do the trip. My cancer patients have been my teachers about life and one of the things they have taught me is to enjoy life now and not put things off for tomorrow what you can do today. So, I finally said yes to Amy. I sat on the fence for a good month though before making the final decision.

And, I am so excited about this trip. I have not been on this long of a holiday in it seems like a lifetime. While I enjoy my job tremendously I am looking forward to being away from it and coming back to it refreshed. If not refreshed I will be in great shape.
